visited louisiana today to survey the damage. president obama will head there monday. and louisiana governor bobby jindal said that both are welcome, but there is no time for partisan politics right now, because the focus is on cleaning up as floodwaters are starting to recede and revealing the extent of the damage. john zarrella joins me now live with the latest. john, explain where you are and what you are seeing. >> anderson, we are in thecity of ameet in louisiana. that is the tangipahoa river, and now people living within miles of the banks of the taken -- tangipahoa river were ordered to evac wait, but positive news to report. they are pumping the water out of the lake and appears that cutting a hole in the dam may no longer be necessary. this is just one of the many lingers effects from hurricane isaac. >> reporter: hurricane isaac descended on louisiana tuesday night nearly seven days to the day that hurricane katrina struck. isaac wasn't such a monster, but it was still a killer. parked on top of louisiana, mississippi and parts of alabama. hundreds had to be rescued. what

president obama is drawing really large, enthusiastic crowds. yesterday in sioux city, iowa, about 10,000 people turned out to hear him speak. they were fired up. they responded with loud applause. when he tried to paint republicans as the party of the past for saying that the republican national convention was basically like watching tv in black and white. on the other hand, alex, he was greeted at the sioux city airport with a huge sign that read, mr. president, we did build this. of course that's a reference to president obama's you didn't build that comment that the romney campaign has seized onto to try to paint the president s a as big government, antibusiness. what it really represents is the electorate is deeply divided in some of these key battleground states that president obama, mitt romney are stumping in in the days leading up to the democratic national convention. and if you talk to political analysts they say what romney did so effectively in his convention speech was to tap into some that have disappointment and to highlight it. so if you talk to surrogates of presiden

and the obama campaign to have vice president joe biden mark the day in a way that was not political. it was just about remembering the people who were lost that day and commemorating the sacrifices people have made in this country because of 9/11. while both sides in the presidential campaign suspended their negative ads for the day out of respect for the anniversary, there's no ban on campaigning today. there's no rule about what you can and cannot do. mitt romney gave a speech today before the national guard association in reno, nevada, and at times it sounded like his normal stump speech. he did go out of his way to attack president obama for defense cuts that are part of the sequester deal. which incidentally, are cuts that paul ryan voted for in congress. that's the kind of thing he's been stay save saying on the stump. after a week and a half of bipartisan blistering criticism of mr. romney for leaving discussion of the war in afghanistan out of his speech accepting the normal mination for president in tampa, paul ryan didn't mention the war if his speech either. but after fac
